What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I did consider using Bauer Media as the publisher for my magazine, as they made magazines such as Q and Kerrang very successful. I think that Q has quite an influence on my magazine, but I believe that IPC Media would be the best magazine publishing company for my magazine. This is because the magazine that I have based mine on (NME) was also made very successful by this company. NME has a similar target audience to my magazine, so IPC Media may be able to help me achieve that target audience.

Question Two:

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine represents a particular social group in different ways. I believe that my magazine represents young men and women aged 16-22, and are people who listen to alternative and indie music, and attend music festivals. I know that people of other ages listen to this music and go to music festivals but I think my magazine represents the age group I mentioned earlier particularly.

My magazine mentions music festivals a few times. Stereotypically people aged 16-22 attend big music festivals with their friends every summer. I want my magazine to be aimed at them as these are the sort of people I would like to read my magazine. I feel that my magazine represents this social group because the mention of music festivals shows their thoughts and feelings about the things that they like to do.

All the images in my magazine are of people from the age group 16-22, which makes it easy for the readers to relate to the magazine. My magazine represents people from this age group as the pictures are of influential people to them. Also the way I have dressed and positioned the people in the photos in my magazine shows similarities to the people that it represents/is aimed at.

My magazine is of the indie/alternative music genre, so it represents the people who listen to this type of music. In general these people all attend music festivals. The people my magazine represent are the same people as my target audience.

On my double page spread, twitter is mentioned. The majority of people is the social group my magazine represents use things like Facebook and Twitter, so this will appeal to the social group my magazine represents.

Magazine Front Cover

This is my magazine front cover.

Photos that I have taken for my magazine.

I have decided to use this photo as the main image on my front cover. I have chosen this one because It is a good close up of her which can fit the masthead and coverlines well around her. I will not be putting coverlines and images over her face as this could ruin the photo and the effect it has on the front cover, and it will make my magazine look very busy.

I am going to use these two pictures as the main images on my double page spread as they both coincide with the article well. The article is about two brothers and this works out well as both of the boys have blonde hair. The mast head and the article will be around the people in the photos and not over them for the same reason as the photo on the front cover. 

I have decided to use these four photos for my contents page as they are all quite different. They all suggest completely different stories. These photos are going to be used to show that there is a lot to read about in my magazine.

I have decided not to use these photos as I believe they will not grab my target audience's attention. I don't think that these pictures would appeal to anyone as they don't particularly relate to anything to do with my magazine (except for the photos with musical instruments in)

Double page spread flat plans

I have positioned my double page spread this way because of the article I am going to use. As it is going to be about two song artists 'vs' eachother, I have decided to give them a page each. Again the masthead will be a large font and very bold (like on the front cover and contents page'. The two page size images will show who the articles are about and the large amount of text will be their story. I think this layout is good as the article will be presented clearly and the pages won't look to busy.

I have made my contents page much more busier than my front page to show that my magazine is jam packed with interesting things. I am also going to use a large mast head on my contents page as well as my front cover as I want my magazine to have the same theme throughout the magazine. So I intend to write 'Contents' in the same font and size at the top of this page, like 'Tempo' on the front cover. The large amount of text will be the list of pages each article will be on. This page is very important to the reader, so it will need to be worded clearly, and i also need to have a good amount of space to write it in. The four images brighten up the page as I do not have a main image as the background for this page.

Front cover flat plans

I have decided to design my front cover in this way as I don't want my magazine to look too busy. I believe that sometimes when things are simple they are better. With a main image and a couple of coverlines it will get the reader interested in what else is written in the magazine. The banner will also say what is featured in the magazine which gives another insight into the magazine for the reader. I have decided to include a second image on the front cover as I think otherwise it may be a bit too simple and won't grab my target audience as much as I want. I have decided to make the mast head a large font to make it stand out.

Magazine Proposal

I have many ideas for my music themed magazine. As a magazine in the genre of music, it will be aimed mostly at boys aged 16 – 23. All the content in my magazine will be aimed at this target audience.

My magazine will include things like album/single reviews, tour adverts, interviews with artists and bands and the latest news from the music industry.

My coverlines will usually be about different artists, bands and their latest news and stories. For example ‘How they made it in the music industry’ and maybe even something about music festivals. I think they should be ones like this because anything that is not about music or in some way related to music, the readers will not be interested.

I am giving my magazine the title Tempo. I think this is a good name as it relates to music, I also asked a range of people from the target I intend to have for my magazine what they thought of the name. 85% of the people thought it worked well for the type of magazine it is.

I decided that I am going to use a tagline and it is going to be underneath to the right of the title. It will say ‘Keeping you up to speed!’ – Which links with the magazine title Tempo. This also suggests to the readers that they will be kept up to date with everything in this area of the music industry after every magazine.

My front cover image is going to be of a song artist. One of the coverlines will be about this person. I intend for the photograph to be a close up of a female. I have decided to use a picture of a female as I believe it challenges the stereotype of an alternative/indie magazine a little bit. I want my magazine to be different and stand out over others.  

My magazine is going to be published every month. I believe that this is the best way to publish it as I think that every week is too much, and every season is too little.
